Andrzej Bargiel
Andrzej Leszek Bargiel, born on April 18, 1988, is a Polish athlete who has mastered the demanding worlds of ski mountaineering, backcountry skiing, mountain running, and climbing. He first gained widespread attention in 2013 when he claimed victory in the grueling Skyrunning Ultra World Championship, solidifying his reputation as a formidable endurance competitor.
However, Bargiel’s most celebrated achievement came on September 22, 2018, when he made history by completing the first-ever ski descent from the summit of K2, the world’s second-highest peak. This daring feat, accomplished without the use of supplemental oxygen, required him to navigate treacherous ice and rock sections before skiing down the perilous 8,611-meter face. The descent was widely hailed as a landmark moment in extreme skiing.
Beyond K2, Bargiel has set multiple speed records on peaks like Broad Peak and Gasherbrum I, often skiing down where others can only descend on foot. His accomplishments also include winning the 2012 Patagonia Expedition Award and earning several podium finishes in the World Cup of Ski Mountaineering. Through his relentless drive and technical skill, Andrzej Bargiel has redefined what is possible at the intersection of high-altitude climbing and skiing, inspiring adventurers worldwide.
